Mentality - Tough Choices: How Making Decisions Tires Your Brain

The human mind is a remarkable device. Nevertheless, it is not without limits. Recently, a growing body of research has focused on a particular mental limitation, which has to do with our ability to use a mental trait known as executive function.
When you focus on a specific task for an extended period of time or choose to eat a salad instead of a piece of cake, you are flexing your executive function muscles. Both thought processes require conscious effort-you have to resist the temptation to let your mind wander or to indulge in the sweet dessert.
It turns out, however, that use of executive function–a talent we all rely on throughout the day–draws upon a single resource of limited capacity in the brain.
When this resource is exhausted by one activity, our mental capacity may be severely hindered in another, seemingly unrelated activity.

Software - Browsers - Sleipnir: Customizable web browser uses IE or Firefox rendering engines

Sleipnir is a web browser that’s popular in Japan and pretty much unheard of in the rest of the world. The Windows-only browser lets users choose between the rendering engines used by market leaders Internet Explorer and Firefox. But Sleipnir is more than just a pretty front end for either browser. It’s a standalone tool that provides users with a huge number of customization options.
Here are a few of the things that make Sleipnir worth checking out:

If you install the optional Gecko plugin, you can switch between the Firefox and Internet Explorer rendering engines with the click of a button. You can do something similar with the IETab add-on for Firefox, but Sleipnir includes this functionality out of the box. You can extend the browser’s functionality with scripts and plugins.

There’s also a portable version of Sleipnir that you can run from a flash drive.

Art - 1000 Journals documentary

1000 Journals is a film about people whose lives are touched by 1000 traveling journals. These blank journals were released into the world in the summer of 2000, by Someguy, a San Francisco based artist. Some people found a journal, or got it from a friend or stranger. Some signed up on the web and received it in the mail. Some wrote in them, others doodled, pasted in photographs, or added artworks. Some kept them. Some passed them on. There are no rules, and no one really monitors these journals and their movements. And yet, they are connecting tens of thousands of people worldwide, provoking and inspiring them.

In September 2003, one of the 1000, number 526, returned to Someguy, filled. What happened to the other 999? This film tells their stories. 1000 Journals shares the experience of their worldwide journeys, and chronicles the self-governed collaboration of thousands of random people who have added to this global “message in a bottle.” Directed by Andrea Kreuzhage. USA. Running time: 88 mins.

The 1000 Journals documentary will be running at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco from Aug. 1 - 7. Check the film’s website for more upcoming screenings.
